The Sea of Poppies!

Sea of poppies at the National Museum of the Royal Navy

Remembrance Day (Nov 11th) marks the 100th year anniversary of WW1 (1914-1918). Millions of Soldiers lost their lives fighting for what they believed was right. That type of honour, courage and bravery should be honoured. And it was this year by The National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN), Dan Ball (Community Engagement Officer) and Kat Henderson (Learning and Outreach Officer) who put together a community participation project advertising to all of Portsmouth and Gosport to knit poppies for the ships crews and sailors who were lost in battle. It’s reach of the project far superseded all expectation of 1,000 participant knitting 5,271 poppies in 3 months and becoming a global effort from USA, Germany, France, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Kat and a member of the Public

To celebrate the reach and effort made by the public and worldwide, on Saturday November 8th 2014. Dan and Cat held a Poppy Celebration to thank all involved in making The Sea of Poppy Project a success. The 100 crowd turnout enjoyed conversation, tea, coffee and finger desserts with later readings by 4 poets who performed earlier in the year at the MNRN Poetry Slam Held by Dan Ball. The Winner of the Poetry Slam Joy Dean performed a beautiful and poignant piece called “2 Weeks From Home”, the runners up John Pearson performed his piece “Aftermath”, Followed by Liz Neal ” 17th of February 1914″ and Elizabeth Davies “War”.  All the poems performed have been inducted into the NMRN HMS Poetry Slam Anthology.

Check out the poems here!

Members of the public at the Poppy Celebration held at the NMRN

Well done to all involved you have been amazing in your efforts! It’s a pleasure to see such a beautiful dedication. Dan and Cat you have done a tremendous job at pulling this together well done!

The 2 installations of the poppies that were made by the people who took part at the NMRN and RNSM (Royal Navy Submarine Museum) will be on display till the ending of November.
